BUILD CAPABILITIES
A good API makes capability understandable to consumers and supportable by the team responsible for it.
Discuss Your BuildCONTRACTS BETWEEN SYSTEMS

We begin with the capability a consumer needs, the resources involved and the behaviour expected. Naming, requests, responses, validation, pagination and error formats are designed consistently. The contract should reveal useful domain behaviour without exposing every detail of the underlying database or service implementation.

Authentication identifies the caller while authorisation controls what that caller can do. We define scopes, roles, tenant context, sensitive fields, rate limits and audit needs according to risk. Secrets and credentials are managed outside source code, and error responses avoid exposing internal information.

Consumers may release on a different schedule from the API. We use additive change where possible, document deprecation and choose versioning according to the interface and ecosystem. Contract tests and representative consumers help reveal changes that would otherwise break an integration after deployment.

A successful request is not the only signal that matters. We monitor latency, errors, dependency health, queues and business critical failures with enough context for investigation. Retry and timeout behaviour is designed carefully so a temporary issue does not create duplicated actions or uncontrolled load.
We select from the fixed development stack according to product experience, architecture, integrations, deployment, maintenance and the team responsible after launch.

The interface should remain clear to consumers and manageable for the team operating it.
Define resources, requests, responses, validation and errors through shared conventions.
Separate authentication from authorisation and protect capability according to context.
Plan additive change, versioning, deprecation and consumer migration deliberately.
Provide schemas, examples, behaviours and constraints that support implementation.
Verify provider and consumer expectations before changes reach production.
Trace requests, dependencies, latency and failures with useful operational context.

Read articleAPI development services can include domain and resource modelling, contract design, authentication, authorisation, validation, error handling, versioning, documentation, testing, deployment, gateway configuration and monitoring. Integration work can also include data mapping, webhooks, queues and third party services. Flashyminds defines who consumes the API and who operates it before choosing the implementation pattern.
